A courier starts the day in London and makes two round trips to Prague in the day. When she
arrives at either airport, she takes the next available flight back.
The daily timetable is shown below (all times are local):

How long is the courier’s day from first take-off to last landing?

A. 4 hours 50 minutes
B. 8 hours 5 minutes
C. 8 hours 20 minutes
D. 11 hours 20 minutes

Some Quick Questions to ask yourself when doing this type of problem-solving:

  • What is being asked? Underline the specifics in the question.
  • Analyse the data, is there anything we can eliminate immediately?

First, we will identify what is being asked. They want to know how long TWO round trip flights will take. This means going from London → Prague → London → Prague → London.

The question is not asking for what is the quickest time so this probably means that there is only one solution. We can start with the first flight.

6:30 to 9:30 (London to Prague)

10:10 to 11:20 (Prague to London)

12:30 to 15:30 (London to Prague)

16:40 to 17:50 (Prague to London)

So, now that we have taken this data, we simply have to calculate the time passed between 6:30 (first flight) and 17:50 (return).

17:50 - 6:30 = 11 hours 20 minutes

Therefore the courier’s day was 11 hours and 20 minutes.
