TAXONOMY & EVOLUTION
-
The highest taxon domain is the domain
-
There are 3 domains:
- What are the characteristics of Archeae?
- prokaryotic cells
- ubiquitous = in every environment
-
What is genetic drift? phenomenon in which the frequency of alleles in a population changes
-
What are the characteristics of bacteria?
- unicellular
- prokaryotic
- no membrane bound organelles
-
Bacterias divide by binary fission
-
What is the founder effect? one mechanism of genetic drift, occurs when a small chunk of a population breaks off from the larger population, where the allele frequency is different.
-
What is the difference between sympatric and allopatric speciation?
-
What is the bottle-neck effect? Mechanism of genetic drift that occurs when the size of the population is drastically reduced (like due to an earthquake, tsunamis, etc.)
-
What are pre and post-zygotic speciation?
- Pre-zygotic isolation happens when there are discordances in terms of space and time, behavior, and mechanics (reproductive organs that are different)
- post-zygotic isolation occurs when two animals of 2 different species reproduce, their offspring is considered a “hybrid” and is, more often than not, unable to reproduce
