Bond formation and enthalpy

When solute X is added to solvent Y, heat is released. Which of the following must be true of the
solvation process ?

A The bonds broken in solute X must be stronger than the bonds broken in solvent Y
B) The bonds broken in solute X must be weaker than the bonds broken in solvent Y
(C)The bonds formed in solution must be stronger then the bonds broken in solute X and solvent Y
D)The bonds formed in solution must be weaker than the bonds broken in solute X and solvent Y
E) None of the above

The answer is C. May I know why

Hi!

deltaH = sum deltaH (bonds broken reactants) - sum deltaH (bonds made products)
Here heat is released to deltaH < 0, for this to work we need the conditions in C)

I don’t think this equation is on the scope of the IMAT?
Hope this helped!!
