IMAT 2012 Q22 [Conclusion | Child Actors]

Child actors tend to become addicted to drink and drugs in later life, usually when they become adults but are not as successful as they were previously. The actors frequently blame their parents, who often manage their children’s career and so have a reason to work them hard when they are young and enjoy the wealth their children generate for them. The child actors who avoid this are often the ones who were encouraged to keep up their schooling and explore other career options.

Which one of the following can be drawn as a conclusion from the above passage?

A. Child actors should have other interests that allow for other career opportunities.
B. Drug abuse is common in the entertainment industry.
C. Young actors who continue to work live happy, healthy lives.
D. Parents should not be allowed to manage the careers of their children.
E. There are fewer jobs available for adult actors.

Which one of the following can be drawn as a conclusion from the above passage?

  • A Child actors should have other interests that allow for other career opportunities.

  • D Parents should not be allowed to manage the careers of their children.
  • E There are fewer jobs available for adult actors.

Summary of Steps to Solve Drawing Conclusion Type Questions:

  1. Read the Question (Every question)

  2. Go through the text and underline evidence

  3. Read the answer and eliminate the outliers

    • (easiest to eliminate contradictory conclusions)Using the underlined evidence and examples, prove each conclusion.
  4. Ask yourself “is this another piece of evidence? Or is this proved and strengthened by what’s in the text?”

  5. Remember to ignore bias and disregard answers that may be true in the real world, but are not supported in the text.

Going quickly over the text: the subject is child actors and their transition into adulthood. It describes how miserable it can be for them, and that the ones who are most successful in life are the ones who are encouraged to keep up their schooling and explore other career options. This could work in to the conclusion that child actors should pursue schooling and explore other career options in order to prevent early burnout. Now let’s look at the answers.

A Child actors should have other interests that allow for other career opportunities.

This is very closely related to the apparent solution in the text. The problem in the text is that these child actors often fall into addictions, are controlled by thei parents, and burnout when becoming an adult. The conclusion that they should have other interests that allows for other opportunities provides a solution to the problem that has been shown to work before (see last sentence of the text - says that children with outside interests are the ones who avoid all the terrible fates). Therefore A is the correct answer.

B Drug abuse is common in the entertainment industry.

This is not the conclusion from the text. The main idea is around child actors, so we know we can neglect conclusions that are not about this. In the text, it says that child actors tend to become addicted to drinking and drugs later in life, but this is to further show the problem that these child actors face and why. This answer choice is not relevant to the text and is something that may seem logical from past knowledge (which we cannot rely upon here). Therefore B is incorrect.

C Young actors who continue to work live happy, healthy lives.

This cannot be inferred from the text. The whole text is talking about the tragedies these child actors go through, and even if you continue to work, there can still be damage from the past. Although it says the children who are encouraged to keep up with school and explore other career options avoid these terrible situations, it does not mean they live happy, healthy lives, it just means they have avoided addiction and other common traps for child actors. Therefore C is incorrect.

D Parents should not be allowed to manage the careers of their children.

In the text it says that the parents are frequently blamed by the child stars, so there could be an argument that states parents should not be allowed to manage the careers of the children, however there are other factors at play. In addition, the child actors who fair the best are those encouraged to keep up school and explore other career options, this solution does not involve the parents. Because the solution to the problem does not involve the parents, we cannot assume that the parents are always responsible for the downfall of these child actors. Therefore D is incorrect.

E There are fewer jobs available for adult actors.

The amount of jobs are not talked about in the text. It also says that the possible addiction arises often when they are not AS successful as they were before, which means they still acted just weren’t doing as well. We cannot know about the job numbers as it is not stated, and the only evidence we just saw showed that there are child actors who continue, just with less success. Therefore E cannot be the answer.
