IMAT 2012 Q58 [Hydrogen Bonds]

Which of the following is/are true about hydrogen bonds between water molecules?

  1. They are weak bonds.
  2. They are strong bonds.
  3. They are temporary bonds.
  4. They require hydrolysis to break.

A. 1 only
B. 2 and 4 only
C. 1 and 3 only
D. 2 and 3 only
E. 1 and 4 only

The individual hydrogen bonds between the molecules are weak, easily broken and temporary. They do not, however, require hydrolysis to break. Meaning 1 and 3 are correct and the answer must be C.

The confusion may come with choosing whether they are strong or not, but remember, they are only strong as a unit.
