IMAT 2015 Q60 [Torques]

Two forces F of equal magnitude act on a beam. Which diagram shows a couple acting and states the magnitude of the torque (moment) of the couple about the pivot? [The pivot is at the centre of the beam]

There are 2 forces of equal magnitude acting on this beam. The total magnitude of the torque acting on the beam would be the combination of said forces.

Since the forces act on the very ends of the beam and the torque is placed in the middle, the moment of each system would be (Fxd).

The forces must be acting in opposite directions for there to be a moment.

Therefore, the answer is E.

But in option E both forces are acting in the clockwise direction???

Yeah but just because they work in the same direction doesn’t cancel out anything.
