Physics question

Hi, interesting question. Certainly the hot topic of online physics solving forums from 11 years ago. Anyways, I linked some of the original answers below, but an interesting thing to think about is if you imagine the hole in the disk was so large that its diameter was just slightly smaller than that of the entire disk, kind of like a ring, if you heat it up, would the metal expand inwards, thus getting smaller? Certainly not. Which is to say that the diameter of the hole is irrelevant, the disk will only ever expand outwards. So yes, D1 and D2 will increase.

[Solved] On heating a circular metallic disc with a circular hole at.

wow! what a topic for sure. I was also pretty confused with this question but from what I can see so far is that this symbol of some sort of ring is used in a lot of questions with different contexts. thanks!
