Question about lipids


can someone explain why the answer should be six in this one? I quite couldn’t understand the trick…

Hi!

The notation linoleic acid (18 : 2) means it has (18 C atoms : 2 double bonds)

So the triglyceride has 0 + 2 + 1 = 3 double bonds in it

As mentioned in the answer above, a double bond is H-C==C-H
to fully saturate it we add two H atoms : H2-C–C-H2

So in total we need to add 3 * 2 = 6 hydrogen atoms to completely hydrogenate this triglyceride
