Thin Layer Chromatography BMAT Practice Q

Hey! I came across this question and wasn’t sure how to approach it. Are supposed to have prior knowledge about this process? It’s Q2.194 from the BMAT practice book and the answer is A. Thanks in advance!!!

Hey!

You would end up with plate 1)
imagine you place a paper towel with a dot made with a marker and dip it into a glass of water, you would see the dot smudge and start to travel up
this is because of the capillary action mentionned
Now rotate the paper towel and dip it again, the smudge once again travels up
plate 1) shows the correct intermediate step here
